Frequently Asked Questions
What is FreshChores?
FreshChores is a gentle, shared task system for households that don't run on rigid schedules.
Instead of daily checklists or strict chore rotations, FreshChores keeps a living pool of tasks that naturally flows over time. You pick something up when you have the energy. The system waits when you don't.
No guilt. No falling behind.
How is this different from other chore apps?
Most chore apps are built around schedules, due dates, and reminders.
FreshChores is built around real life.
- Most tasks don't reset daily
- Missing a day doesn't create failure
- Nothing becomes "overdue"
- One person completing a task completes it for everyone
It's designed to reduce mental load, not increase it.
Who is FreshChores for?
FreshChores works best for households where:
- Days don't all look the same
- Energy and availability fluctuate
- Traditional chore charts feel stressful or unsustainable
- Multiple people share responsibility for a space
This includes individuals, families, couples, roommates, and shared living situations of all kinds.
Is this an ADHD app?
FreshChores is not only for people with ADHD. But many ADHD and neurodivergent households find that it fits their lives especially well.
The system was designed for:
- Irregular energy
- Non-linear productivity
- Reducing shame and pressure
- Working with how people actually live
You don't need a diagnosis to benefit from that.
Do chores have deadlines or due dates?
No.
Tasks in FreshChores are shown based on how often they realistically need to be done. Recently completed tasks rest. Older tasks gradually rise.
Nothing becomes overdue. Nothing breaks if you take time off.
What happens if I don't do chores for a while?
Nothing bad happens.
FreshChores doesn't punish gaps in activity or reset progress. When you come back, the task pool is still there, calmly reflecting what needs attention.
The system is designed to wait for you.
Can tasks be shared between people?
Yes.
Tasks can be shared across your household. If one person completes a task, it's marked complete for everyone.
No double work. No coordination overhead.
Can certain tasks be meant for certain people?
Yes.
Some tasks are better suited to certain people, whether that's due to age, ability, preference, or availability.
FreshChores lets you associate tasks with specific people without enforcing rigid assignments or rules.
Is this good for kids?
Many families use FreshChores with children, especially when they want:
- Age-appropriate tasks
- Less nagging and reminding
- A calmer way to build responsibility over time
Parents remain in control of what tasks exist and who they're intended for.
Can tasks be relevant to certain days or seasons?
Yes, but without turning into a rigid schedule.
Some tasks matter more at certain times:
- Taking the trash out on collection days
- Seasonal chores
- Monthly or quarterly upkeep
FreshChores lets you mark tasks as especially relevant on certain days, months, or seasons.
This doesn't create a deadline. It doesn't mean you failed if you miss it.
It simply helps the system surface tasks when they're most useful, while still respecting that life happens.
Does that mean I have to do the task on that day?
No.
FreshChores never forces tasks or marks them overdue.
If you miss a day, the task stays available and naturally rises again when it makes sense.
What are "modes"?
Modes let you change what you see without changing the system.
Examples include:
- Essential mode to focus on basic upkeep
- Room focus to see tasks for one space
- Power mode to see everything when you have energy
You can switch or combine modes anytime.
Do I need to set everything up perfectly?
No.
FreshChores works best when you start simple and let it evolve. You can add tasks as they come up, adjust frequencies over time, and ignore anything that doesn't feel useful.
There's no "correct" configuration.
Is FreshChores about productivity or optimization?
No.
FreshChores is about care, sustainability, and reducing mental burden.
Doing small things consistently — when you're able — adds up to a healthier home without pressure or shame.
Is FreshChores available yet?
What kind of feedback are you looking for?
We care most about:
- How the system feels to live with
- Whether it reduces mental load
- What feels supportive vs. stressful
- Where it doesn't match real life yet
FreshChores is being built in collaboration with the households who use it.
Who FreshChores may not be for
FreshChores is intentionally gentle. That means it's not the best fit for everyone.
You might want a different tool if:
You want strict schedules and deadlines
FreshChores doesn't use daily resets, overdue tasks, or enforcement. If you prefer rigid chore charts with fixed days and consequences, this may feel too loose.
You want motivation through pressure or gamification
FreshChores avoids shame, streak pressure, and competitive scoring. If you're looking for points, penalties, or performance tracking as motivation, this likely won't click.
You want tasks tightly assigned and monitored
FreshChores supports shared responsibility and flexibility. If your household needs strict task ownership, auditing, or enforcement, this isn't designed for that.
You're aiming for immediate, perfect order
FreshChores works through small, steady actions over time. If you want a system that promises instant cleanliness or total control, this may feel unsatisfying.
That said, many households find that when pressure is removed, participation actually increases.
FreshChores is about sustainability, not control.
